Nicaragua

Nicaragua, about the size of Iowa, is rich in forests and has a fairly tropical climate. Education is mandatory for ages 6-13, but only about one-third complete primary school (possibly because students are expected to pay for tuition, supplies, etc., on their own). Approximately half of Nicaraguans are Roman Catholic, attending mass weekly. Religious traditions still play a significant role in most families.

Vida Joven (Young Life) began in Nicaragua in 1988 and has developed a strong presence in the country. It has ministries in more than 25 communities and employs 38 national staff. They have 302 volunteer leaders and more than 900 kids attending club.
