Oscar lives in Bilwi, Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, with his parents and three nieces. From a young age, he always questioned his purpose in life: “What was my purpose? Why was I born? What am I doing here?” Despite being raised in an evangelical family, his parents gave him the freedom to make his own decisions about faith and school, which led him to neglect his studies and feel a sense of emptiness. “I felt like I was worthless,” he recalls. This void led Oscar to believe he had to do everything on his own, but despite his efforts, he continued feeling unfulfilled. His struggles led to bad decisions, including the use of tobacco and alcohol, which he believed would offer an escape from his problems.
Oscar’s life changed at a Young Life camp, where he heard about a loving Father who was proud of him. “They told me about God, that there was a father who loved me and that there was value in my life.” This message resonated deeply, reminding him of the question he had asked as a child. Oscar began a relationship with Jesus, asking Him to take away his pride and escape mechanisms. Today, he walks hand in hand with Jesus, aspiring to use his life to encourage other young people. He dreams of offering hope to those who feel unheard and unseen, just as he once did.
Now a Developing Global Leader, Oscar’s vision for the future includes finishing his university degree in business administration from Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University, owning a business, and creating opportunities for young people to work and study. He shares, “I want to be a professional and fulfill my purpose to help others and share Jesus with my friends and classmates,” He hopes his success will also allow him to continue his leadership work with Young Life, reaching new places where young people haven’t yet heard of Jesus.
