My name is Jerome, and I live in the Budaka district in eastern Uganda with my elder brother, his wife, and their son. Growing up with seven siblings, providing for our family in these circumstances proved challenging, causing much household tension and little love. My outlet became alcohol.
During my high school years, I was expelled due to alcoholism and felt that my parents hated me. I felt hopeless and worthless. My saving grace was an invitation from our local Young Life area director to allow him to “do life with me.” He began sharing his wisdom on the emptiness of alcohol and the fullness of the love of Jesus. He saw potential in me to the extent that he encouraged me to complete my education and helped with my fees. Experiencing such devoted love and learning about our Savior’s sacrifice prompted me to start my relationship with Jesus. As I grew in my faith and self-confidence, I realized I was meant to serve as a Young Life leader and give back the love that was given to me.
As a Developing Global Leader, I will be the first in my family to earn a college diploma. I attend Kabaale University where I'm studying mechanical engineering. As a boy, I built cars using bicycle spokes and spare parts. My father complimented my ingenuity and said I would make a fine engineer one day. I have taken great pride in that affirmation and will use my God-given talents to care for my family and continue to share the joy of living in a relationship with my heavenly Father.
