Germaine is an intelligent and magnetic young woman who lives in the Kasenga neighborhood of Uvira, Congo (DRC). She lives with her parents and is the oldest of seven siblings. Her family home was recently swept away by flood waters, adding to the many financial challenges her family has faced. Paying for her school fees has been a continuous burden for Germaine’s family. Thankfully, her uncle intervened and helped make her the person she is today. Germaine wants to fight for her family and against the poverty they face on a daily basis.
Growing up, Germaine’s mother was a Christian and took her to church and Sunday school. At a young age, she started singing at church. She became involved in Young Life as a teenager and made the decision to follow Jesus. She is now a club and campaigners leader in Uvira. As a leader, she has discovered the importance of serving Christ in her community.
Germaine will be the first person in her family to graduate from college. Her vision for her education is to become a “girl who can serve her community and address the large-scale poverty it faces as well as meet the needs of her family”. As a recipient of the Developing Global Leaders scholarship, she is nursing at the Higher Institute of Medical Technology of Uvira. She wants to create apprenticeship training in her community for various professions and specifically serve women and orphans while leading Young Life and pointing those around her to the Gospel. Through her studies, she wants to fight for her family and against the poverty they have faced.
