Isaac
My name is Isaac and my friends call me Captain. My family said that I was born by mistake; I have never met my father. When I was six months old, my mother left me with my grandmother and went to look for a job. My grandmother struggled to raise me on the meager income of selling local alcohol. When I was ten years old, my mother returned, married to another man.
I was raised attending church with my family, so I grew up knowing about Jesus, however everything changed when I experienced his love at Young Life camp. What I believed about Jesus changed, and I started to forgive and live peacefully believing in Him. It was very hard to change my lifestyle, especially overcoming temptation, but I was determined to not repeat the mistakes of my father. I connected with Young Life through a football team in my community. Now, this same team creates opportunities to invite young players to Young Life clubs, camps and campaigners.
I always wanted to go to college, however finances and severe sickness were an ever-present obstacle. My vision is to study hard so that I can reach my goals and secure a job in the hospitality industry. With the opportunity to be the first in my family to attend the university, the Developing Global Leaders scholarship is serving as a bridge to my success at the Zenji Centre of Excellence for Tourism. As a Young Life leader, I am committed to doing contact work in hopes that my community will see the changes of the youth through the working of God.
