Simon

My name is Simon, but I go by Gabu, and I am from Nairobi, the sprawling capital city of Kenya. Raised by a single mom, life was always a struggle for my siblings and I, as we labored to meet basic needs. With few resources and opportunities for a way out of poverty, I decided from an early age to focus on my studies and one day be part of the solution for the struggles in my community.

In high school I was invited to Young Life club. It meant everything to be welcomed and included into such a loving environment. Everything changed when I gave my life to Jesus at Young Life camp and began growing in my faith. For the first time in my life, I saw a bright future ahead of me. Shortly after, I became a leader and could not wait to be the one to invite and welcome teens. I am overwhelmed by the opportunity to pursue friendships with kids, take them to camp, and see their eyes light up with hope for the future.

I have always been interested in cooking and preparing food as a way to care for others. As a Developing Global Leader, I am studying hotel management at Kenya Utalii College. I hope to have the knowledge and skills to open my own catering business and create job opportunities for many young people in my community. I am changing the course for my family by becoming the first to graduate with a college degree.
