Anyerika

My name is Anyerika and I am from a town called Bonao in central Dominican Republic. I live with my parents and my brother and sister. I had a good childhood, full of love, however, adolescence was a difficult time for me. I struggled with insecurity, shyness and depression. I was bullied in school due the brace I wore to correct my severe scoliosis. Thankfully, my family has always been a tremendous support system for me.

I grew up in a Catholic family and spent time with many people who follow the Lord. However, I did not form a personal relationship with the Lord until I went to Young Life in high school. I found a community that did not bully me for my scoliosis, but instead, accepted me for who I am. They showed me how fun a life with God can be. Thanks to the unconditional love of Jesus, I have managed to overcome that season of insecurity and today I am not afraid to serve Him and preach God’s Word. I still have scoliosis, but it no longer affects my emotional or spiritual life.

As a Developing Global Leader, I will be attending Autonomous University of Santo Domingo to study clinical psychology. With this career, as well as in my ministry with Young Life, I hope to be able to help young people in my community. I dream of creating a free psychological support network for young people who suffer from depression, bullying, shyness, and other conditions.
