The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola next to Haiti. Family and community are very important in this culture. Even though public education is free, only one-third finish school. The country has very distinct lines between social classes which create barriers in relationships, education and political areas. A vast majority claim to be part of the Roman Catholic Church; very few integrate their religion into everyday life.

Vida Joven (Young Life) in the Dominican Republic has been growing steadily since it began in 1986. There are currently 11 national staff and more than 100 volunteers in the country; more than 500 kids are attending club in the DR. There is a Vida Joven presence in 18 communities with potential for many more. Young Life has been developing and utilizing a camp, Pico Escondido, located in the DR which has contributed significantly to the growth of the ministry.
