Hawanatu

Hawanatu Koroma was born and raised in Sierra Leone. She grew up in a humble family where her father was a farmer and her mother was a petty trader. She lost both of her parents at a young age and she went to live with her late uncle’s wife in a single-parent home. Despite financial struggles, Kama refused to give up. She learned to be resilient. Her faith in God and encouragement of her community kept her moving forward and taught her compassion.

Kama first heard about Young Life through a classmate who invited her to club. She soon found a place where she was loved and cared for. The turning point came at a Young Life camp, where she heard about Jesus’ love, His death, and resurrection. There she gave her life to Christ and discovered that she did not have to carry her burdens alone. She was involved as a Campaigner kid and for the last 5 years she has served as a Team Leader. Her responsibilities include contact work, running club, one-on-ones with students and working closely with her Area Director. She also serves on the praise team at church.

Now a Developing Global Leader, Kama will begin studying nursing. She chose nursing after watching her father be denied treatment because her family could not pay the hospital bill. That experience gave her a heart to serve and care for others. Through DGL, she wants to take her studies seriously, grow in communication and leadership, and use every opportunity to glorify God and impact young people for Christ.
