Sara

My name is Sara Kuma, but everyone calls me Sari. I live in Kebridehar, Ethiopia with my dad Kuma and my family as my mom is deceased. I am the first in my family to go to university. Growing up in the Somali Region taught me resilience early. Life here is shaped by hard work, community, and faith. Despite water shortages, droughts, and daily challenges, my family taught me the value of unity and perseverance.

I grew up in a Full Gospel church. At 13 years old I gave my life to Jesus and truly understood grace and salvation. My greatest challenge has been living out my faith in a Muslim-majority community in Kebridehar. At first, it was difficult to find a strong peer support network, but I overcame it by intentionally building peaceful, loving, and respectful relationships with everyone around me, while staying rooted in my faith. I first heard about Young Life through our Area Director Eyob and social worker Biniyam. They invited me to a club meeting. I was deeply inspired by the welcoming community and the love for youth. For 3 years I was a club/campaigner kid, and for the last 3 years I have served as a leader of Wyldlife, YoungLives and Capernaum Clubs.

Through the Developing Global Leaders program, I will study Management in Business and Economics at Kebridehar University. I chose this field because I’m passionate about solving real problems and creating positive impact in my community.
