Alejandra Jehimy

Born in Bogotá Alejandra has been deaf since birth. Her parents, both deaf, along with extended family members. Raised by her mother after her parents' separation, she didn’t know Colombian Sign Language (CSL) until she moved to live with her father and attend a supportive Christian school where all classes were taught in sign language. At nine, her father abandoned the family, leaving her in a difficult situation with her stepmother, and she soon felt isolated. Eventually, she entered a harmful relationship, which led to a time of deep discomfort. Finally, Alejandra found the courage to end the relationship and, with help from her school, moved into a new home. “Living with a hearing family who didn’t know CSL has been a process of adaptation and learning to communicate little by little, however they have shown me love, attention, and have helped me grow,” she says.
Joining Young Life Capernaum in high school changed her life. Alejandra shares, “It was striking to hear young people talk about Jesus with such clarity and passion.” She made the decision to follow Jesus fully. “I felt loved and forgiven, not judged, and that’s when I committed to a new life with Him.”
Now a Developing Global Leader, Alejandra is studying visual communications at a local university and will be the first in her family to earn a college degree. She expresses, “The career I have chosen, will give me opportunities to reach more deaf youth. I would love to generate strategies and tools so that the message of Jesus can reach even more clearly to the deaf community. I dream of bringing YL Capernaum to all deaf youth in Colombia."
