My name is John Emmanuel, and I live a humble life with my grandmother in Mandaluyong City, Philippines. I am unsure of who my father is, and my mother is no longer in my life. As a child, I always compared myself to other children with nice things and whole families. The comparison took much of the joy out of my childhood. Each week during mass, I heard it preached that the secret to loving is forgiveness. Ultimately, I felt I was the reason for my broken home. I was hurting deeply and felt alone.
It wasn’t until someone invited me to join the Parish Youth Ministry that I began to feel a shift in my life. Although initially uncertain, I attended the meeting and was surprised to be warmly greeted by the leaders and the members. My eyes were opened when I discovered that history doesn't define who you are and it is okay to love yourself. As I began to participate in more youth activities, I felt safe among them and could finally smile and interact more. They deepened my understanding of Jesus and caring for others. I now commit to helping young people by becoming a friend and an example of Jesus.
As a Developing Global Leader, I will be the first in my family to graduate college. I attend Paco Catholic School in Manila City, where I will earn a bachelor’s degree in religious studies. I have seen through my childhood how important it is to have people in your corner to support and care for you. I also realize how essential it is to know your Creator. I aim to become a religious teacher to the youth in my community, allowing me to interact with youth and share the love of Jesus with everyone.
