My name is Melvin, and I live with my parents and siblings in Parañaque, Philippines. As a child, we lived in poverty. It was common to lose power and try to navigate our home by candlelight. There were seasons where clean drinking water was a luxury and having one meal a day was commonplace. My parents remained diligent, trying to find good work to provide for our necessities and education fees. While so many things were unpredictable, my parents’ faith was not. God heard the prayers of my parents, and my father was given work in construction. I knew then that the Lord was good and moving for us.
It took some time for my parents’ faith to become my own. During a pivotal point in my life, I lacked direction, yet knew there was something more. I rejoice when I think about the day I began my relationship with the Lord and faith became a profound part of my life. I found myself praying regularly, taking active positions in my church, and excited when given the opportunity to serve in Young Life. I am fortunate to help guide and direct the youth in my community and hope to be someone who always points them to Jesus.
As a Developing Global Leader, I attend Olivarez College and am studying information technology. There is a growing need for technology in our city and my goal is to use my education to lift my family out of poverty and to serve others by embodying the love of Jesus.
