My name is Novvy Lycah, but my friends call me Kaykay. I was born out of wedlock and my mother was my father's family’s housemaid. My father supported me financially and my mother and I lived in my father's house until his legal wife returned from living abroad. We moved in with my older sister but it was a very difficult relationship for me. She acted as if she hated me and always humiliated me in front of people. Things got worse when my mother met another man and chose to be with him and left me for him. I was left living with my relatives, relying on the support of my father and siblings. I wanted to be angry at my mother because of her decisions but I couldn’t do anything, so I just kept praying to Jesus.
I praise God that I knew Jesus as I walked through these trials, because my father introduced me to Christianity when I was a young girl. Eventually, I got connected to Young Life because of our area director. She welcomed me and I felt happy and comfortable making Young Life my second home. The camps I attended made my summers complete. Through Young Life, I realized the blessings in my life and that while I may not have the perfect family, the Lord gave me a new family who would always be there to support me. I am also grateful to the ministry because I was able to meet people who have gone through similar struggles as me.
Now a Developing Global Leader, I hope to represent Jesus in many ways, especially through my chosen major of hospitality. I will be the first in my family to graduate from university.
