I am Dhanalakshmi and I live in a ghetto in South Asia with my mother. At a very young age, I lost my dad to alcoholism. As a dressmaker, my mother was unable to provide food or pay for my education fees, so I was forced to live in a childcare center. I felt like an orphan. The conditions were bad, and resources were limited. When I was old enough to attend high school, I was released from the center. After years spent aching for my family and feeling like I completely missed my childhood, adjusting to society outside the center proved difficult.
Life began to change when I was invited to attend Young Life camp. It was the first time I heard the name of Jesus. While sharing about the loss of my father, my leader mentioned we have a Heavenly Father, one with whom we could have a relationship. Something changed with that invitation. My heart became fuller, and I felt a belonging. After camp, I continued to process and grow deeper in my knowledge and understanding of Jesus. He was the Father who would never abandon, always love, and accept me just as I am. When I met Christ, my perspective on myself and my life completely changed for the better and my life took a completely new direction.
As a Developing Global Leader, I will be the first college graduate in my family. I am seeking a business degree and hope to get a job where my talents and leadership abilities can create opportunities for a better life for those around me. I believe God has called me to become a pioneer in ministry and business. I pray I will be a light in my community and help others who feel lost or unwanted.
