My name is Thomas, and I was born and raised in one of the most remote parts of Liberia, called Halip town. I am from a family of five, which includes our father, my little brothers and sisters since my mother passed. As a child, I did not understand that I personally had inner talent or worth. I had bad habits such as lying to my neighbors or cheating others all the time; it was normal and comfortable. But through my Young Life team leader, I have come to understand that my life has worth and meaning by God's plan and purpose.
I lived with foster parents for a time and the wife was a fervent woman of prayer who devoted her entire life to Christ. She introduced me to Christ. I got connected to Young Life through two volunteer leaders, and our friendship grew out of constant visitations right after the Ebola epidemic in Liberia caused many to lose their lives. I am grateful to use my passion as a Young Life leader and impact my community for Christ.
Now as a part of the Developing Global Leaders program, I attend African Methodist Episcopal University and am studying public administration. Through the selection of my major, I envision an environment where every teenager, youth and adult, regardless of status, can achieve well-being and an opportunity to thrive because of good governance and accountability. Specifically, I hope to see disadvantaged youth and less-fortunate girls and women become educated, skilled, and innovative individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society.
