Jose Angelo

Jose Angelo, who usually goes by his nickname of Ja, lives in a small creekside compound in Paranaque City, Philippines, a city located in the southern portion of metro Manilla. His mother is a housewife and his father is a construction worker. Although his family is quite poor, Ja considers himself rich in terms of companions, having grown up with a small community of families all living together. Ja graduated from high school in 2013, but couldn’t continue his education because his family couldn’t afford it. Instead, he got a job in order to help with his family’s finances.

Ja says he didn’t know anything about Jesus until he went to Young Life camp. About camp, he says, “It had a very big impact on my life. Jesus came alive to me and I decided to follow Him and started passing on the love I felt at camp to others.” A volunteer leader since 2015, Ja sees how God moves in everyday life. He knows he must never stop sharing Jesus’ love with others because Jesus never stops loving us.

As a Developing Global Leader, Ja is studying information technology because it is one of the fastest growing fields and the most in-demand job in the Philippines. He wants to challenge himself with this ever-changing field of study. He will be able to support his whole family with this career and raise their standard of living, releasing his family from their financial distress. Ja plans to continue serving and supporting Young Life when he graduates because he will never forget the impact YL has had on his life. He says, “All I want for my community is peace.”
