Veronica grew up in a large family with four siblings, in one of the world’s poorest nations, Sierra Leone, which has a literacy rate of about one-third and is predominantly Muslim. Her father is a retired soldier and her mother works as a local trader; money for the family has always been in short supply.

Veronica was working as a teacher’s assistant at a high school when she first met some of the Young Life leaders. She says one of the Young Life leaders started explaining their work and invited her and some of her coworkers to see a club, which hooked her. Veronica began volunteering with Young Life in 2010 and has been a solid leader ever since.

Now, as a part of the Developing Global Leaders program, Veronica has the opportunity to attend college – something that was previously unimaginable for her. She is pursuing a degree in human resource management at the Institute of Public Administration and Management, because she believes that “it will help me to contribute positively to the human development of my country.” Veronica continues to be an excellent Young Life team leader and helps supervise Freetown West Young Life. She says that her leadership “has made me a role model in my community; every parent looks up to me for advice.”
