Christian

Christian’s mother died when he was just six years old, and he says that he grew up always feeling lonely because of it. Christian lives in Bo, the second largest city in central Sierra Leone, raised by his grandmother and father. His father is a retired government worker, so the family has to get by on his small government pension, which is barely enough to cover their basic needs. Living through a civil war and the Ebola crisis, Christian says that his biggest life challenge was actually figuring out a way to be able to go to college someday.

In high school, Christian says he was befriended by a Young Life leader named James, who invited him to Young Life camp. He says his life was transformed and that Young Life has become the family that he was missing since his mother’s death.

Christian believes that God has also answered his prayers with a new opportunity. Selected for the Developing Global Leaders program, Christian is now at Njala University studying social work. He wants to become a social worker “in order to transform the lives of young people.” He is a Young Life leader himself now, the team leader for his neighborhood club, where he has been serving since 2008. He is the youth volunteer president for a local community organization, is a young adult leader at church, and speaks three languages. Christian will be the first person in his family to go to university.
