Nyanguru

Nyanguru is from Mwanza, a town in northwest Tanzania. He grew up with his parents and two sisters, until his father married a second wife as is traditional for many Islamic men. From that time forward, Nyanguru’s father favored his second family and eventually became invisible at home, and when he did return, there was anger and violence. His mother eventually separated and Nyanguru and his mother sought to live with his sister in hopes for more tolerable living conditions. Nyanguru graduated from high school with a credit to go to college, but his mother could not afford it so he found a job to help support the family.

While in high school, Nyanguru went to his first ever Young Life camp with his leader. He got to hear the word of God and gave his life to Jesus. Once home, his leader continued mentoring him and sharing the love of God with him. Now he is a team leader and has started Young Life clubs in new areas in his city.

Nyanguru’s vision and hope is that his university education which will help him to transform his community as well as lead to a job to enable him to support himself and his family. As an accounting student, he is pursuing a degree from Tanzania University of Accountancy. He will be the first in his family to go to university. Nyanguru shares, “As a part of the DGL program, my goal is to continue to proclaim the greatness of God in my daily life. I will continue to work diligently as a Young Life leader, reaching out to kids and building relationships with them. I plan to support my high school friends in every event, through joy and sorrow.”
