Maira

My name is Maira and my friends call me Mai. I am twenty-six years old and I live in Chaco - Villa Ángela, together with my grandparents and my brother. My mother was a single mother at the age of sixteen; I was her first child, and then my brother arrived when my mother was eighteen years old. When I was about eight, my mother married and went to live with her husband, while my brother and I stayed with my grandparents.

I was born into a Christian home where my grandparents told me about Jesus all my life, but my relationship with Jesus began in my teens when my mom attempted suicide. I began looking for God and a path to forgive my mother. At the age of nineteen, after a love breakup, I began to cling more to Jesus. God showed me His love, as only He can do. My connection with Young Life began when my cousins invited me to camp. The fifteen minutes alone with God changed my life. Later as a leader at camp, I realized that I like working with teenagers. I strive to daily walk with Jesus and see Him in the simple, unexpected details of life and my goal is to serve God and do my job with excellence.

With the DGL scholarship I will be attending Eben-ezer Aulas and studying obstetrics. I will be the first in my family to graduate from college. I chose this specialty to educate young women about the reproduction process from a Christian perspective. My mom’s experience as a teenage mother is a huge motivation for me. This profession will pave the way for me to one day be able to work with teenage mothers while continuing training and serving with Young Life.
