Dorcas

My name is Dorcas. I live in the capital city of Accra, Ghana, with my husband and four children in a one-bedroom dwelling. Growing up, I faced several challenges that shaped my childhood. We struggled continuously to pay for school fees in addition to providing for our daily needs. My father became seriously ill and was moved repeatedly among hospitals for treatments, compounding the difficulties in continuing my education. However, through great perseverance, I will be the first person to graduate from college in my family.

I grew up in a Christian home with my parents and family sharing my faith in Christ. My belief in God grew as I learned more and more about His love for me through the sermons and my involvement at church. Later, I was introduced to Young Life by my husband. I became passionate about meeting and mentoring teens and am now a leader in my community.

I always believed that God would help me continue my education. As a recipient of the Developing Global Leaders scholarship, I am studying nursing at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and could not continue my education without this scholarship. I want to become a nurse and be an advocate for better healthcare in my community. Additionally, I am compelled to encourage teens to persevere in their education and share a message of hope for the next generation.
