Ammi

My name is Ammi and I am from Greenville, Liberia. I'm the third child of my mother, and sixth of my father. When I was three, my parents separated and by the time I was five, I had been sent to live my aunt who worked as mother in a home of ten children at the SOS children's village. I attended the SOS school and I grew up as a happy kid and felt truly loved for the first time in my life. My life was filled with lots of laughter until my aunt and her husband died. This broke me down; I was abandoned and I was not prepared to face the world on my own. Depression became a friend of mine and I looked down on myself. There was a family dispute over their estate, so I had to leave because I wasn't a child of that family. I dropped out of school and went back to my hometown and lived with relatives.

When I was a child my aunt was a Muslim, but she knew that my mom and dad where not of her faith so I was raised without any knowledge of God. In high school I was invited to Young Life club and also went to my first Young Life camp. I met Jesus Christ at camp during quiet time; I thought about how Jesus died for my sins and regardless of my worst behavior, He still loves me. I gave my life to Christ that night, and it has given me great courage to go forward regardless of the challenges.

I have always dreamed of being an entrepreneur. I started a little back yard garden, which helps us a lot. Also, I grow crops for commercial and personal use. My garden is my friend. This has inspired me to study agriculture at United Methodist College of Agriculture. My country, Liberia, needs more to feed herself. I dream of becoming an agriculturist who can eventually establish a large farm, and feed many people in my country. As a Developing Global Leader, I am thankful to God for such a great opportunity to serve in Young Life as a team leader in my home city while studying my passion of agriculture.
