Roselyn

Roselyn, who usually goes by “Selyn,” lives in a small flat in Ormac City, Philippines, with her parents, grandmother, and 3 younger siblings. Her father is a car radiator repairman and her mother is a housewife. She says of her childhood, “Although we were never affluent, we were abundant in love.” Selyn says her involvement with Young Life has helped her overcome many challenges in life such as living through Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and helping her family survive her father’s tuberculosis diagnosis.

Grateful and inspired by her father’s will to push the boundaries of his capabilities after only finishing three years of primary school, Selyn is studying mechanical engineering at Palompon Institute of Technology as part of the Developing Global Leaders program. She is determined to upgrade their family’s standard of living and become the most prominent mechanical engineer in the Philippines. Her recommender describes Selyn as “teachable, dependable, and highly academically motivated,” and says, “She is a great leader who always takes the initiative to serve and love teenagers in her community.” She will be the first in her family to graduate university.
