Dominique "Donia"

Dominique, who prefers to be called “Donia,” grew up the sixth born of eight kids in Port Au Prince, the capital and largest city of Haiti. Her father left the family when she was a young girl, leaving her mother to raise her children on her own as a street merchant. She says the most challenging experience in her life was when her mother left the family for a period of six years and her older siblings had to take care of them. She says the experience made her understand the importance of family and taking care of one another.

Donia became involved in Young Life when her older sister took her to club one day. She has been serving as a volunteer leader for over a year before being selected into the Developing Global Leaders program. She is now studying nursing with the desire give back to her community by providing affordable medical care to people in need. Donia says, “I too couldn’t afford medical care when I was sick, but the doctor took care of me anyway. I will never forget his generosity and will strive to help others just as he helped me."
