John

John lives in Kainmary, a small, rural village in southwest Bangladesh with his parents, younger sister, and grandmother. He grew up spending a lot of time in the open air and fields and remembers his childhood fondly. Even though his family has been through many crises due to being poor, he is grateful that they have always stuck together and their family unit is strong and bonded. John’s biggest challenge in life has been getting through school. He and his family often had to make the difficult choice between food and education. John says, “If my father would continue to pay for education expense, my whole family would starve.” He appreciates the perseverance, hard work, and sacrifices of his family to get him where he is today. John graduated from high school in 2012.

John got involved with Young Life first as club kid, then in Campaigners, and finally as a volunteer leader. He says, “Young Life taught me many things, and when I started to apply their teachings, good things began happening in my life: the more I learned about God, the more my life changed and started to shine. Serving in Young Life has been a great privilege to me.”

Now, as a Developing Global Leader, John is pursuing a degree in accounting, but hopes to work for Young Life after graduation. He says, “I chose Matthew 28:19-20 as my life verse, which inspires me to work for God’s Kingdom. I don’t want to do ministry as my career but from my heart.” He will be the first in his family to graduate university.
