Lovetta "Memi"

Lovetta, who prefers to be called “Memi”, was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone but moved to Waterloo where her family relocated. She is the oldest of four children. Her father is a village pastor and her mother is a teacher. Living through a civil war and the Ebola crisis, Memi says, “My greatest challenge in life has actually been struggling to gain higher education.” With a 2% university enrollment rate for her country, it is nothing short of a miracle that she is now able to attend university.

As a Developing Global Leader, Memi is studying accounting. She recognizes the corruption that plagues her country’s government and finances and wants to be an avenue for change, saying, “I want to use my major to help our society. With Christ in me, I believe I can change things for the better and change the current status quo.” She will be the first in her family to graduate university.
