Maria

My name is Maria but go by Masha. I’m an orphan. When I was one, my brothers and I were relocated with foster parents who had eight other children. I lived with this family until I was 18 and although at times I felt a lack of parental love and care, I am very grateful for this family. I now live in Zhytomyr, Ukraine in a dormitory where I share a room with a friend.

During my childhood I attended a Christian camp where I heard about the love of God and His desire for me to be His child. Everything changed in that moment and I repented. Young Life was introduced at my church and I started spending time with people who inspired me and have been great examples for me. I felt a huge responsibility to the teenagers I serve, so I started to read and study the Bible more and now I notice God in my life at every turn. One of the most difficult events in my life was waking to the sound of explosions during the onset of war in my country. I had to make many difficult decisions, and even routine parts of my life were strained. Despite everything, I did not relocate but stayed home and served the teenagers of my city.

As a recipient of the DGL scholarship, I am pursuing a degree in physical education. I love that sports develop the physical sphere and the mental one. I dream of working as a school coach for children to instill the right values and a godly worldview in the younger generation. I will be the first in my family to earn a university degree.
