Melissa

Originally from a dangerous area in a large city in Haiti, Melissa now lives in a small village called Croix des Bouquets built after the earthquake for survivors who have disabled family members. Melissa is one of six living in two rooms and a kitchen without electricity and water. She and her family count their home as a gift after the many difficulties they have faced. As a young girl, Melissa’s mother suffered an accident that left her with a permanently injured foot. Only a few years later, her father passed away. Melissa shares that in spite of the many difficulties she has faced, the goodwill of others enabled her to pay her school fees and complete high school.

In her new home, Melissa found herself surrounded by friends and leaders who were involved in Young Life. After hearing repeatedly how much fun Young Life was, she went to camp and heard the message of God’s love. After meeting Christ, Melissa shares that her life is completely different. “My walk with Jesus is awesome and God always surprises me. He protects me from the dangers I face daily and uses me as a role model for other young boys and girls like me. I did not expect that from God.”

Now a Developing Global Leader, Melissa is studying nursing at Notre Dame University of Haiti. Her goal is to graduate and work hard to help others and provide for her family. Melissa is eager to grow Young Life and impact more kids with the hope of the Gospel. Melissa is proud to become the first in her family to graduate from university.
