Addis

My name is Addis. I grew up in a town called Debrebirhan popularly known for the production of wool in Ethiopia. My father worked as a shepherd and took care of our family by selling our sheep's wool to the local factories. My mum is a stay-at-home mom. Our lives came crumbling down when my dad passed away unexpectedly. I had to take up the role of providing for my siblings by assisting my mother with paying bills. I would attend school and then work casual jobs after school and during the holidays to be able to make ends meet.

I was brought up in a Christian family and served in the church as a young girl. Being forced to mature earlier than my age because of my dad’s demise, I was robbed of the chance of a normal childhood. I found myself withdrawing from people and activities that I had once participated in. One day I met a friend who introduced me to a Young Life club. I loved the way they loved kids. The laughter and joy in the club reminded me of my childhood days, and I longed to feel that kind of peace within. I made a decision to be part of the team, knowing that I could help bring joy and peace to kids in my community.

I am now a Developing Global Leaders student pursuing a degree in business management at Victory College in Debrebirhan. My dream is to see more people in my community pursue higher education. I am privileged to be the first person in my family to join the university.
