My name is Buze short for Bezuayehu and I live in Shashemene, a small city in Ethiopia. I was raised by my mom after the death of my father when I was very young. She always tells me I was a very smart and efficient child and a quick communicator with others. I also loved playing football. Growing up without my father has been the greatest challenge of my life.
When I was in high school, a Young Life leader met me and invited me to club. I didn't grow up in a Christian family, so I had no idea what to expect. I had often heard people talk about Christ, but I never gave it more meaning than hearing. Everything changed when I went to camp. I heard the gospel in a way I could not deny and realized that there was nothing I could do to be saved apart from Jesus. My sense of identity changed from that day forward and now, as a Young Life leader, I speak these same words of hope to teens in my community.
I have always wanted to be an accountant because I love mathematics. Receiving the Developing Global Leader scholarship enables me to attend Rift Valley University and study accounting in the business school. I want to grow more in responsibility and leadership and become a top-level student. I desire to grow more in Christ, be a great example to many youth, and develop more Young Life leaders in my community. Ultimately, I would love to serve on Young Life Staff, provide for my mother and serve my country. I will be the first person in my family to earn a university degree.
