Alexa

Alexa grew up in the northeastern coastal town of Nagua, Dominican Republic with her mother and younger sister. Her father works construction but has not lived with or supported the family in years. Although her mother works hard to provide her daughters with all their basic needs, she struggles to make a living selling small goods. Alexa’s biggest life challenge has been learning to forgive her father for being absent in her life. She realized five years ago when she met Jesus for the first time in a local church that she has a heavenly Father who will always be present. She says of this experience, “When I visited the church, I had so many questions for God, but in that moment of despair, Jesus met me personally, consoled me, opened my eyes, and made me feel that he was near.”

Alexa became involved in Young Life after her leader in church invited her to club and Bible study. She then went to camp and realized her call in life was to disciple and mentor young people. She had been serving as a club director in her area for two years by the time she was selected for the Developing Global Leaders program.

With the financial strain of being raised by a single mother, Alexa wouldn’t have been able to continue her education. However, now as a DGL student, she is now pursuing a degree in psychology. After graduation, she wants to help young people with limited resources heal from trauma and mental illness. She will be the first in her family to graduate university.
